Florida Man Burns to Death in Sauna, Family Files Wrongful Death Suit

When you use a service like a sauna, you should expect to be able to use it safely. Florida law protects you from companies whose defective products cause damage to your property, injury to your person, or perhaps worst of all, death in your family. When one South Florida family purchased a sauna, they had no way to expect the tragedy and alleged wrongful death that followed. When tragedy strikes, you can count on a local Florida personal injury attorney to protect your interests.

A Daughter’s Horrifying Discovery

In mid-January, a South Florida man jotted a note to his family to let them know he would be using the sauna at the residential community where they lived. He frequented the sauna in order to treat a nerve-related medical condition called “neuropathy.” When he did not return for several hours, however, his daughter opened the sauna door, but quickly closed it because she did not recognize the man inside. It was only when she saw her father’s clothes that she had the terrible realization: her father had been trapped inside the sauna for hours, and his skin had been unrecognizably charred.

Her mother, and the man’s wife of nearly fifty years, assisted her daughter at the scene. and emergency responders were called. Unfortunately, it was far too late. His wife, whom the man had met in high school, witnessed her husband’s skin still clinging to the sauna bench. The family still cannot erase the image of their loved one’s deceased remains from their minds. Even as the family is still in mourning, they are nevertheless acting quickly to ensure that the responsible parties are taken to task.

Seeking Justice and Protecting Others

When a family faces a tragedy, they have options. In this case, the family hopes that the police medical examiner will assist in investigating the medical cause of their loved one’s death. Some suggest it may have been a heat-induced stroke or heart attack, but the family’s attorney believes the man asphyxiated in the sweltering heat. An autopsy is still pending.

An attorney can also investigate what happened and who may be responsible. Based on their investigation so far, they believe that the timer in the sauna was faulty, resulting in the man being trapped in the sauna, with the heat still engaged, for far too long. Further, the coils themselves may have malfunctioned. In cases like this, the attorney can demand to inspect the sauna’s mechanisms and even have a mechanical engineer examine the system. The family intends to sue the housing complex, condo association, and sauna maintenance company for failing to check and ensure the safety of the sauna.

If you have lost a loved one due to a defective product or a company’s irresponsible procedures, you can take action to seek justice and compensation, and to protect other families from the same fate.
